Whales may be relatively intelligent, but so are pigs --- and they are slaughtered without much concern.
To the Faroese, our whales are just another kind of animal that naturally exists in abundance.
We're sometimes told that whale hunting belongs in the past, that it should have died out with Moby-Dick.
But could the same not be said about all meat-eating?
I could argue that everyone who hunts and eats wildlife is sparing farmed animals years of unhealthy captivity.

クジラは比較的知能が高いと言うが、それは豚だって同じだ…それなのに、その屠殺については大して気にされない。
フェロー人にとっては、クジラも自然にたくさんいる動物の一種に過ぎないのだ。
時々、捕鯨はもう過去の歴史であって「白鯨」とともに時代遅れになったとか聞く。
でも、同じようなことは肉食そのものにも言われている。
また、野生を狩って食べることは、不健康な監禁状態を何年も強いられる家畜たちの命を助けることにもなるのだ。
